Only the finest quality materials, certified timbers and locally sourced hardwoods, are used to create beautifully considered furniture.
Operating from a workshop in Ballynahinch, John Piekaar Fine Bespoke Furniture design and make contemporary furniture using fine cabinet making techniques and hand finishes. We caught up with John to get a closer look into the beautiful furniture.

What makes your product unique?

I offer the client the opportunity to commission a unique and made to order piece of fine furniture. Using the finest Native and European hardwoods, I hope to make the process an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

What inspires you as an artist/maker?

Beautiful craftsmanship and detailing. I get inspired by makers who are experts and true artisans in their chosen medium.

How did you get started?

I originally completed an apprenticeship in Furniture making and this inspired me to apply to study a Degree in Furniture Design and Craftsmanship in England.

After working for other companies I decided it was time to set up my own business as a Designer / Maker.

Why do you think it’s important to keep local?

Most of my commissions come through word of mouth. This is the best form of advertising and means that people are more comfortable in approaching you. I also use timber suppliers who actually know the provenance of where the tree was originally from. This is important from a sustainability point of view and offers a unique selling point.

What motto do you live/work by?

I believe you have to enjoy your work and that this will come across in the quality of your product. Most Designer / makers are very down to earth and approachable so hopefully this makes the commissioning process easier.
